For a “last hurrah” of summer we visited Yellowstone and Grand Tetons. For me Yellowstone has a mythical quality, like something you hear about as a kid but can never imagine seeing yourself. Side note: in elementary school I remember looking at photos of friends’ vacation photos, being captivated by streaked-light Disney parades, road trips, and close cousins that I’d never meet. Everything seemed grander in my imagination than it surely was in real life.
Soren’s school starts after Labor Day, which meant I could still find accommodation when looking in April (many people book lodging in the park a year in advance). The park is so big that it requires careful planning. Staying in one place would add hours of driving time each day.
Day 1 (Aug 22): Supply pickup, overnight Emigrant (11 768 steps)
The new PDX ceiling is gorgeous! It’s worth a trip to the airport to take a look and have a bite to eat even if you’re not flying. A short flight brought us to Bozeman, Montana, where we picked up our bear spray rental, groceries, and dinner. The sun was setting as we pulled into our one-night glamping tent in Emigrant.
Once we found a working grill we enjoyed s’mores followed by stargazing from hammocks. It was a great start to the trip. Unfortunately, a wind and rain storm started up in the middle of the night. While I was thankful to be in an elevated canvas tent, the zipper pulls rattled incessantly and some water dripped on us.
