Day 3 – Maasai Mara safari

We slept well, regardless of shrieking baboons and monkeys outside the tent. The tent flaps need to be locked to ensure no curious animals become unexpected house guests.

Morning safari started at sunrise, 6:15. The hot air balloons added to the magical ambience. It took great resistance to not ask our guides to continually stop for photos as most everything looks picture perfect.

Having breakfast in the bush allowed us to stretch our legs and enjoy a longer morning safari. It was also a nice opportunity to listen to the insects and enjoy the peace of no car noise (they do generally also stop the engine when we’re up close with animals).

Back at camp we had time for showers and camera downloads before lunch. I appreciate that all of the meals have included a delicious vegetarian option. Since we like to share we ensure we get to try a little of everything. During lunch I spotted a giraffe and its young way off in the distance. It was thrilling when our guides found them at the start of our afternoon safari.

Since our morning included lions walking directly next to the car, I thought peak safari had already been reached. However, there were cheetahs to be seen! Then, when we were watching the cheetahs, our guides heard from a friend that a rhino was spotted! Rhino are incredibly rare in the Mara; they said that people can go on safari every day for two months and not see one. The guides themselves were incredibly excited. I’m thankful the guide is experienced in driving on the bumpy, muddy track as the ride over felt like a race.

The rhino was beautiful. I knew it was something special when one of the guides took a photo with his phone through the binoculars. Such a good day!
